The sources that jurisdictions adopt as authoritatively binding are the defining options of any legal system. Yet classification is a matter of type rather than substance since comparable guidelines usually prevail. Ancient Egyptian law, dating as far back as 3000 BC, was primarily based on the idea of Ma’at and characterised by custom, rhetorical speech, social equality and impartiality. By the 22nd century BC, the traditional Sumerian ruler Ur-Nammu had formulated the primary law code, which consisted of casuistic statements (“if … then …”). Around 1760 BC, King Hammurabi additional developed Babylonian law, by codifying and inscribing it in stone. Hammurabi positioned several copies of his law code throughout the kingdom of Babylon as stelae, for the entire public to see; this grew to become known as the Codex Hammurabi.
